Ilo Ilo
Just managed to catch Anthony Chen’s much acclaimed feature Ilo Ilo.
What a treat it was.
I especially like how much effort was put into the smallest of details to make
sure that the setting is convincingly like how it was in the 90s.
I tried to find flaws that shouts, “this doesn’t belong in the 90s” but I can’t.
The only obvious one was the block signage (Blk 701 Bedok Reservoir Road) in one
of the scenes. It shouts out, 2011 General Election.
As a kid growing up in the 90s, I can totally relate to that period of time as
our parents were struggling through the financial crisis. I remember my own
domestic helper who I spent most of my school days with as both of my parents
were out working.
I wonder how is she. I hope she’s still healthy and well and enjoying her
retirement back home.
Thank you Anthony for such a brillant film.
